2 weeks with my Wife’s Fit has me thinking that that having some kind of tall hatchback thing would be nice. Mostly for transporting product for work. There’s are a few thing I have to pick up from local venders, or my sister stores, and her car made that a lot easier. A manual E91 328i would be ideal but they are rare as hen’s teeth. One car I like that isn’t rare is the Countryman Cooper S All4. Bonus is they are usually actual colors!
Being a tall FWD baes car, it could be absolutely no fun to drive, so maybe after driving one I could check them off the list. But I found this manual 2012 for a semi reasonable price only an hour and a half away. I figure it’s at least worth looking at. Until I read this.
oh yeah it’s one of those clutchless manual transmissions. I understand Vegeta’s unyielding rage.
Also PSA: if you like dragon ball Z even a little bit, go watch DBZ Abridged. The editing Voice acting, and most of all humor are all spot on.

Turbo 1.6 Mini’s are heinously unreliable.

I got one as a loaner several years ago and hated EVERYTHING about it. The seating position was awkward almost as if the seat wasn’t aligned with the whheel and pedals. The autobox sucked. I think it was an older unit they didn’t put in their BMWs anymore but somehow still used for Mini. The handling doesn’t inspire any confidence at all. I nicknamed it the Countryblob. Unless you get it dirt cheap, there will be something better out there for the money.

That’s what I’m mostly afraid of. Buying a use BMW was enough of a gamble, I don’t think I want to drive down the Mini rabbit hole.

If you got an E91 to compliment your E90, you would become the budget version of E90M3

You really, really don’t. I was seriously considering a Mini, and then I did my homework.
When a quick search on complaints makes FIAT look good? RUN. LIKE. HELL.

The N14 engine used in the 2007-2010 S models is a complete dumpster fire of an engine. It was so bad they replaced it with an entirely new engine, the N18, for 2011. The N14 deserves all the hate it gets but the N18 isn't a bad engine.

Look around and see if you can find a Suzuki SX4 hatch. They exist with AWD and a stick in a tall wagon-y body style. Another Oppo had one and I think they had a decently reliable time with it?

Was that any better?

The only problem with the SX4 is that I’ve become accustomed to power. Turbo 4 or inline 6. The Suzuki wouldn’t have much more power than my wife’s Fit, which is so sloooow.

It would be replacing The E90 if I got one. I’m not about to have 2 car payments, and I still own like 7k on it.

The N18 is miles better than the N14. The N14 was a reliability disaster while the N18 is reliably solid. Not bulletproof, but solid.

Nobody said you couldn’t swap it.

What about a V50 AWD? Likely less problematic than a MINI, and while the rear won’t hold a flea market sofa (according to James May), it’s a good size vehicle. Plus there are Polestar and Heico parts that fit them.

Turboing an SX4 is apparently a relatively-common mod. If I hadn’t discovered that I’ve matured past that level (lower-tier and size cars)
, I’d still be on the hunt
for one.

My wife has a 2015 Mini 4-door, Cooper S - not a Countryman or a Clubman. Decent cargo area in the back with the seats down, but for sure smaller than a Fit or the Country/Clubman versions (something like 18" shorter I believe).
The only reason I’m telling you this is I think it’s a great little car with the 2.0 turbo, and 6-speed auto (yes, really - I hate automatics but this one doesn’t bother me).
I haven’t driven an FWD clubman but I drove a 2019 AWD with the same engine / transmission as my wife’s. It was... fine. Felt heavy because it is. But with a manual, I’d consider one as a replacement for my E46 wagon.
